Being stood up
Have you ever waited for someone at a cafe or restaurant only to have them call you to say they can't make it? This is called "being stood up". Strangely enough, being called a "stand-up guy" means you are reliable. After all, English is a strange language. Enjoy your day.

Snowed under Recently there have been many exciting developments in our schools. As a result, we have been a bit "snowed under" with additional tasks and took a one month break from one point lessons. We can use "snowed under" when we are overwhelmed by work.... Take care that you don't get snowed under too! No big deal
This is an expression we use to say "it was nothing" or "no problem". For example, you are taking your bags downstairs to the car and your friend offers to carry one for you. Afterwards, you say: "Thanks, you're a great help!" They say: "No big deal. Anytime!" Try it next time..... Do the math
Do the math is another way to say "think about it"... For example: You and your friends want to go out for the evening but you only have one car and there are 9 of you. Your friend says: Why don't we go in your car? You say: I only have a Corolla and there are nine of us, we'd better call a taxi. You do the math. Next time, try it out.... Bear with me
"Bear with me" is a phrase that we can use to ask someone to give us time, i.e. "be patient". For example: "Bear with me for a moment while I check my calendar, please." Try and use it next time you want to say "Please wait" Big deal!
"Big deal" can be used to talk about something which had been exaggerated or that we don't think is so important. For example: Your friend tells you they just got a new phone, but you are not really impressed. You reply, "Big deal, it's just a phone...." Or, your friend surprises you for your birthday with a huge cake and party with 50 friends. They made a "big deal" of your birthday. (You think they did too much for this event.) As per request we are launching a regular Saturday "conversation only" class, similar to our Freetalk sessions held over the past 6 months.
There are 3 available Saturdays next month so I have reserved the following times in June for the Saturday afternoon 90 minute conversation session. June 1 4:00pm - 5:30pm June 8 4:00pm - 5:30pm June 22 4:00pm - 5:30pm Some of you may not be able to attend every time so I have decided it is possible to subscribe in two patterns: 1. Pay as you go - 2,000 yen each time (payable at the lesson) 2. Monthly subscription (for June) - 4,500 yen (payable at the beginning of the month) The main points of the session: 1. Lot's of talking 2. Relaxed atmosphere 3. 90 minutes duration 4. No preparation, no homework 5. Just come, bring a friend and have fun! Location: Nakajima Koen Classroom (Sun English) Sun English School パークビル208 札幌市中央区南9条西3丁目 Who should attend: People who wish to practice English in a dynamic environment and improve discussion skills. Reservations are required. Click here or send us an email. ASAP
This means: As soon as possible. This is pronounced either as A-S-A-P or A-SAP. We can use it like this. "Can you send me your monthly fees ASAP?" I have a pile of English books gathering dust in my bookshelf at home and although I never read them they are too good to throw out. So I have decided to open an English Book Club in our Nakajima Park (Sun English) classroom.
How does it work? I will open a new page on this web-site where you can browse the books that we have available and if you would like to reserve one please send us a message from the Book Club page (coming soon). Does it cost anything? The book club is free for current students and sponsors. For other members wishing to borrow books there is a membership fee of 2000 yen, renewable each year. How long can I borrow a book for? Books may be borrowed for up to 2 weeks each time and extended if there are no requests for it at the end of the loan period. What is a sponsor? Anyone who donates their books, magazines, DVD sets or book cases to our club is able to borrow other books under normal conditions at no cost. We hope that all members will sponsor so that we can all share in a "free" book club. When will it start? The book club will be open from the 15th of May 2013. Stay posted for more updates. When is it?
